In practice, the two are far more compatible than most homeowners assume — the conflict usually arises from treating Vastu as a rigid checklist applied after the structural scheme is already fixed, rather than a set of orientation and zoning principles considered from the earliest design stage.
The most common friction point is column placement near the north-east corner, traditionally reserved for the puja room or open space in Vastu planning. A structural engineer working in isolation might place a column exactly there for load efficiency. When architecture and structural design happen in parallel — as they should — the column grid can be shifted a few feet without meaningfully increasing cost, while fully respecting the zoning requirement.
Similarly, Vastu's preference for heavier construction in the south-west and lighter, more open construction in the north-east aligns naturally with good passive design practice in most Indian climate zones: it places thermal mass where afternoon heat load is highest and openings where morning light and ventilation are most valuable.
